Accessibility Statement
This statement applies to mybursary.org and the myBursary platform, operated by Senha Ltd trading as myBursary.
Our commitment
We want everyone who uses myBursary to be able to access it. That includes students who may be using assistive technology, navigating on a mobile device, or accessing the platform on a slow connection.
The 16–19 Bursary Fund is designed to support students who face barriers to participation in education. It would be contrary to that purpose if our platform created barriers of its own. We take that seriously.
Compliance status
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. WCAG is the internationally recognised standard for web accessibility, and Level AA is widely considered the appropriate target for platforms serving the public.
We believe myBursary is partially compliant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Known areas of non-compliance or limitation are listed below. We are actively working to address these.
Technical approach
The platform is built using semantic HTML5, Bootstrap 5, and Django. Our technical accessibility approach includes:
- Semantic HTML — we use appropriate landmark elements, heading hierarchies and ARIA attributes throughout the platform to support assistive technology
- Keyboard navigation — the platform is navigable by keyboard without a mouse, including form controls, modals and navigation elements
- Focus management — visible focus indicators are present on all interactive elements
- Skip navigation — a skip-to-content link is available at the top of each page for keyboard and screen reader users
- Colour contrast — text and interactive elements are tested to meet WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text)
- Decorative icons — icons used decoratively carry
aria-hidden="true"to prevent unnecessary announcements by screen readers - Form labels and error messages — all form fields have associated labels and descriptive error messages; errors are identified by more than colour alone
- Responsive design — the platform adapts to different screen sizes and zoom levels without loss of content or functionality
- File upload — the evidence upload interface is keyboard-accessible and provides clear feedback on upload status
Known issues
We are aware of the following areas where the platform does not yet fully meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA:
- Some complex data tables (for example, in the staff application review interface) may not provide complete context for screen reader users navigating by cell. We are reviewing how to improve table header associations.
- PDFs or documents uploaded as evidence by students are not produced by us and may not themselves be accessible. We cannot control the accessibility of third-party documents.
- Some status indicators use colour as the primary means of conveying information. We are working to ensure these are accompanied by text labels or icons with accessible names.
If you encounter an accessibility barrier not listed here, please tell us — we want to know.
Feedback and contact
If you cannot access any part of myBursary, or if you experience an accessibility barrier, please contact us:
